Rubber Mastic Tape
What is Rubber Mastic Tape
Rubber tapes are designed for use in splicing and terminating wires and cables with options rated up to 69kV. They have excellent physical and electrical properties and are ideal for adding moisture protection and padding to electrical connections and cables. Mastic is a very tacky material with extreme elongation properties. Rubber mastic tape combines an ethylene propylene rubber backing with a conformable mastic layer. Rubber Mastic Tape integrates some of the best qualities of both materials−higher temperature rating, conformability, dielectric strength. It's one tape that belongs in every toolkit.
Advantages of Rubber Mastic Tape
Durability
Rubber Mastic Tape is highly durable and can withstand harsh conditions. It is resistant to water, chemicals, and abrasion, making it ideal for long-term use.
Flexibility
Rubber Mastic Tape is highly elastic, which makes it easy to apply and conform to irregular surfaces. This makes it ideal for sealing and insulating applications.
Adhesion
Rubber Mastic Tape has a strong adhesive backing that ensures a secure bond to a variety of surfaces. This makes it ideal for applications where a strong seal is required.
Curing is not necessary
Adhesives undergo an irreversible phase change (from liquid to solid) to make strong adhesive and cohesive forces. Rubber Mastic Tape tapes, it can readily flow and set on the substrate without heat or long curing or drying times. The fluid properties of the pressure-sensitive adhesive change rapidly due to its viscoelasticity.

Proper wrapping
Shouldn't snap when you wrap.
Wrapping tape on a high voltage cable can be time consuming and error prone since the careful build-up of tape requires accurate half-lapping and constant tension in order to reduce build-in air voids. Rubber tapes are designed to stretch−some up to 1000%. Elongating the tape this way drives to compression, and that results in the strong self-fusion that provides great insulation and moisture protection.
In a typical tape splice, you'll tug and pull out the tape, stretching it to just before the breaking point. The tape's width narrows to about 1/3rd of its original size. The tape's length increases; your hand travels very quickly up to 20” away from where you started. Quite often you'll be wrapping in a tight location making this even more difficult. Proper taping techniques are critical to realizing the many performance benefits of rubber tape.
Backwinding rubber tape allows you to tuck the excess back onto the roll as you work, pacing out more as you make your half laps around the cable and helping prevent the tape from getting progressively further away from the work area.
Even pressure on the stretch helps eliminate voids and bulges, sometimes called ‘pregnant splices'.
A good rubber tape won't snap and break when you wrap.
Splices and terminations should always be jacketed with vinyl tape for protection from chemical contaminants and physical damage. Vinyl jackets help keep your cable from collecting debris.
Dielectric strength of rubber tape increases as you add layers. For low-voltage applications (<600V), always apply a minimum of 2½ half-lapped layers.
Moisture control
Self-bonding helps makes an air and watertight seal.
Rubber tapes repel moisture and are a great solution for outdoor applications or in manholes where water may occasionally seep in.
In production plants and manufacturing facilities where steam, dripping water and elevated humidity are present, self-fusing rubber tapes provide much needed moisture protection.
In a harsh environment, one that is subject to chemical and harsh fluid exposure; overwrap with a hearty vinyl tape to help prevent copper corrosion.
High temperature performance
Engineered to beat the heat.
Anyone who's left a roll of general purpose vinyl tape in the cab of their truck on a very hot summer day can attest to the fact that heat makes the adhesive soft. Extreme heat makes it ooze and flow.
Extra padding
Thicker for Padding. Designed to take the shake.
Engines and motors in a production line subject electrical connections to extreme vibrations. Rubber tapes are typically 4 times thicker than vinyl electrical tapes and provide extra mechanical protection for connections like motor leads that are subject to constant vibrations. They also provide excellent padding and conformability around surfaces with irregular, rough or sharp edges like bus bar and split bolt connections.

First of all, waterproof sealing tape has important applications in the construction industry. For example, when building watertight doors and airtight doors, rubber sealing tape can play a good sealing role. In the construction of glass curtain walls, aluminum doors and Windows, it can also be used to fill the gap between two objects, so as to achieve the effect of sealing and waterproof. In addition, in construction, the use of rubber sealing tape to fix and connect objects of different materials is also very common.
Secondly, in the field of ships, waterproof sealing tape is also one of the most basic sealing materials. For example, in the ship's warehouse doors, deck hatches, bulk cargo hatches and other places, rubber sealing tape can play a waterproof, sound insulation, heat insulation and other roles. Waterproof sealing tape can also be used for the sealing of fish boats, boats and yachts to improve the safety factor and ensure personal safety.
Third, in the automotive industry, waterproof sealing tape is also widely used in the sealing and sealing of automobiles. For example, it is necessary to use waterproof sealing tape on the front windshield, door, front cover, back cover and other places of the car. Waterproof sealing tape can effectively isolate wind, noise and water flow, so as to improve the driving comfort of the car.
How Can We Use Rubber Mastic Tape Correctly
Due to its good heat resistance and electric trace resistance, silicone rubber self-adhesive tape is often used for the external binding of motor and electrical lead wires. But if we can't use it correctly, we may not give full play to its advantages.
Clean up
Before use, the interface to be repaired or sealed shall be cleaned as much as possible to avoid excessive impurities. If not cleaned, it will have a slight impact more or less.
Don't forget to tear off the film
The product is easy to be scratched on the bright surface, so it needs to be wrapped with the next layer of film in the production process to protect the self-adhesive tape, so use the product to tear off the upper and lower layers of film first.
One layer stretch winding cover
Similar to the repair of other rubber products, it can be gently stretched and wound layer by layer from the interface to be repaired until sealed and covered.
Wait until self fusion reuse
After winding the product, it cannot be put into use directly. It needs to wait for a period of time. After the product is self integrated, the two ends of the product are bonded with the product.
If the temperature is too high, it can be used with black tape
The waterproof performance of the special waterproof silicone rubber self-adhesive tape goes without saying that the strong insulation is also a major selling point of it. However, due to the use of electrical insulation materials, its heat resistance will be relatively poor. If it is necessary to improve the heat resistance, it can be used together with the black rubber tape.
Rubber Mastic Tape Manufacturing Process
Unrolling polypropylene film
Whether you are producing shipping tape, electrical tape, or any other type of tape, the production process begins with rolls of polypropylene plastic film. These rolls are loaded onto a machine called an unwinder. Workers then place a strip of adhesive splicing tape along the end of each row to connect the rolls and ensure continuous feeding of the line.
Unwinding the rolls onto the splicing tape
As the rolls unwind, their ends are glued to the splicing tape at the beginning of the next row. This process is repeated over and over again, with the end of each roll sticking to the beginning of the next.
Automatic Tension Adjustment
The automatic tension adjuster ensures even film pulling and prevents tearing.
Applying Solvent
The unwinder applies solvent to the surface of the film to prevent sticking during unwinding. The machine then coats one side with a hot adhesive made from various components, known as hot melt glue.
Preheating Holding Tank
The hot melt adhesive is loaded into a preheated holding tank and kept at 390 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent hardening. The holding tank pumps the adhesive to a machine called a blower, which wipes away excess adhesive and then rolls the film.
Use of Cooling Rolls
Cooling rollers immediately harden the adhesive. A computerized sensor ensures even adhesive application and adjusts output when needed. For double-sided tape, a barrier layer is inserted during the winding process and the process is repeated on the other side.
Rewinders
The rewinder rolls the tape into spools and separates the spliced spools. Once loaded, a knife is used to separate the tape at the splice point for the next stage.
Slitter
Slitters with blades divide the tape on a reel into strips according to the desired width. For example, transportation tapes can be produced in 31 strips per reel.
Finished tape rolls
Each tape is wrapped around a cardboard core and sealed with a label. The length of each tape roll varies according to customer specifications. The finished tape rolls are ejected from the packaging.
Quality Control Inspection
Prior to packaging and shipment, the tape undergoes a quality control inspection. A common test method is to unroll the tape with the adhesive side facing up, then place a stainless steel ball down the incline and measure the adhesive force over a specified distance.
Understand each tape's properties. Read the manufacturer's specifications and recommended tips for tape storage. Some tapes are designed to stand up to high heat temperatures. Therefore it's adhesive will fare better in your truck over a long summer of 90°+ days than standard duct tape will.
Avoid exposure to direct sunlight. Do not leave your tape near the window where it can soak in UV rays for a prolonged period of time. Ultraviolet light can affect the chemistry of a tape's adhesive and cause it to become hard and brittle.
Be mindful of temperatures. Try to avoid both extreme heat and cold. High heat can melt a tape's adhesive and cause it to become a sticky mess. At the other extreme, if left in your truck amid freezing temperatures tape's adhesive may become too brittle to work. Ideally, tape should be stored in a cool, dry location. This isn't always possible to try to keep tape stored somewhere else other than your truck when outside temperatures get to extremes. If that is impossible, keep only the amount you will use in a day in the truck and keep restocking as needed.
Have a system for cycling your mastic tape. No matter how well you take care of your tape, you cannot maintain its reliability indefinitely. The best solution is to cycle your tape. Devise a labeling system so that you use the oldest tape first.
How to store rubber mastic tape
First, you should store tape somewhere away from the light, particularly windows. Ultraviolet light can even penetrate the packaging with time.
Then, you should store the tape in a cool place; the cooler the better, preferably 60°F/15°C or cooler.
Also, make sure to keep it dry. Even the presence of moisture in the air can contribute to a chemical reaction. Just take it out of storage a day or two before you need it to let it recover to room temperature.
You should also store your tape in such a way that you know when each lot was delivered so that you can use the oldest tape first.
Find out from your supplier what a safe height would be to stack the cases of tape and the skids on top of one another. Certain tapes can be crushed and badly damaged when the boxes are overloaded. Ideally, the storage should be on racks and take up just one skid.
Besides proper stacking and cool, dark, and dry storage, best tape storage practices dictate rotation of stock to yield the best value out of your adhesive tapes.
